Winter Garden:What To Plant And How To Protect From Frost

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

Not ready to put away your garden tools for the winter? You don't have to!

The tricky part is picking what plants will withstand and grow in cold weather. Depending on where you live, you'll want to check out which zone you are in and then plant from there. It'll be easier to have a winter garden for me, as I'm in California. But if you're in a snow/freeze zone, it may be more tricky.

Here is a list of hardy crops that can handle freeze temps:

Lettuce

Broccoli

Cabbage

Swiss Chard

Brussels Sprouts

Leeks

Kohlrabi

Mustard

Onions

Garlic

Carrots

Bok Choy

Spinach

Beets

You may want to think about building a tunnel to cover the crops. Especially if you have snowy winters. You can easily build one with some pvc pipe and plastic.

You'll want to open it up to get air and sunshine to the crops during the day.

Otherwise, if you have mild winters, you could probably get away with just covering your crops at night with a fabric sheet.

Placing a thick layer of mulch about 2-3 inches, will also help keep the topsoil safe from frost.
