What To Plant In A Fall Garden?

Writer's picture: Patricia TurkPatricia Turk

It's time to sow those seeds for Fall!

Summer brought me an abundance of tomatoes and zucchini. I am completely zucchini bread-ed out! This weekend I ripped out that squash plant and tilled my soil, planted my seeds and am excited to some fresh crops to my garden.

What to plant in September?

I'm in California, so I have a wider variety of crops that I can plant this season due to the warmer weather. Check your zone to see what's safe to plant in you state.

Here's what my kids and I planted in our Fall garden:

  • Corn

  • Cucumbers

  • Lettuce

  • Kale

  • Basil

  • Cilantro

  • Arugula

  • Carrots

  • Butternut Squash

  • Peas

  • Green Beans

  • Ground Cherries

  • Beets

  • Radishes

  • Broccoli

  • Tomato

You can also plant:

  • Okra

  • Eggplant

  • Spinach

  • Parsley

  • Peppers

  • Kohlrabi

  • Cauliflower

  • Brussels Sprouts

  • Cabbage

  • Celery

  • Endive

Don't forget to rotate your crops if you are planting in an established garden and also, replenish nutrients by fertilizing and spreading fresh soil and compost.

Do you garden with your kids? What is their favorite thing about gardening?

My kids love to play in the dirt the most! :)
